Melanie Fiona Hallim, known professionally as Melanie Fiona, is a Grammy Award-winning Canadian R&B and soul singer-songwriter renowned for her powerful voice, emotional depth, and classic-meets-contemporary sound. Born on July 4, 1983, in Toronto, Ontario, she is the daughter of Guyanese immigrants of African, Indian, and Portuguese descent. Growing up in a culturally rich and musically inclined household—her father was a guitarist in a band—Melanie’s early exposure to soul, reggae, and classic R&B laid the foundation for her musical journey.
Melanie first gained industry attention as a member of the girl group X-Quisite, which earned a Juno Award nomination before disbanding in 2005. She later collaborated with then-up-and-coming rapper Drake as part of the duo The Renaissance, and also wrote songs for major artists like Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall. During this time, she also recorded under the alias Syren Hall, exploring her reggae roots with tracks like "Somebody Come Get Me."
In 2009, Melanie released her debut solo album, The Bridge, to critical and commercial acclaim. The album showcased her versatility, blending vintage soul with modern R&B, and produced several hits. The breakout single "It Kills Me" topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for ten weeks and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Another standout from the album was "Lions, Tigers and Bears", a fan favorite that further established Melanie’s reputation for emotive storytelling and rich vocal delivery. The song resonated widely, charting on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a staple on R&B radio stations, helping solidify her place among contemporary soul artists.
Her sophomore album, The MF Life, arrived in 2012, debuting at number seven on the Billboard 200. That same year, she earned two Grammy Awards for her collaboration with CeeLo Green on "Fool for You," winning Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song.
Melanie has been candid about her personal evolution, embracing themes of healing, empowerment, and self-love. She welcomed a son, Cameron, with musician Jared Cotter in 2016 and launched Melly Belly, a lifestyle brand focused on supporting mothers.
Today, Melanie Fiona continues to inspire as not only a musician but also a speaker and wellness advocate, sharing her journey through motherhood, mental health, and self-discovery. Whether on stage or through her outreach work, she remains a voice of authenticity, strength, and soulful artistry.
